These are some books and videotapes that I feel would help veterinarians, owners, trainers, and handlers who own, work with, or handle any of the Working or Atheletic Dogs.  I do not sell any of these books or tapes.  I list them because I have viewed or used them myself.

(If there are books or tapes that are not listed, and you know where I can attain a copy, please let me know and I will read or view it to see if it should be listed here.)

Suggested Readings and Videos

These are some books and videotapes that I feel would help veterinarians and those individuals that own, work with, or handle any of the Working or Atheletic Dogs.  I do not sell any of these books or tapes.  I list them because I have viewed or used them myself.

Books

Care of the Racing Greyhound: A Guide for Trainers, Breeders, and Veterinarians. Drs. Linda Blythe, Jim Gannon, & A. Morrie Craig.  Published by the American Greyhound Council (1994), available through: National Greyhound Association, PO Box, 543, Abilene, KS 67410, (785) 263-4660.  This is an excellent book that covers most aspects of caring for the Working and Athletic dog.  Even though its title lists the Greyhound, a lot of its information is applicable to all breeds.  The information provided in this book is beneficial for veterinarians, handlers, trainers, or owners

Canine Sports Medicine and Surgery. Drs. Mark Bloomberg, Jon Dee, & Robert Taylor.  Published (1998) by W. B. Saunders Co., The Curtis Center, Independence Square West, Philadephia, PA.  This is a must have textbook for veterinarians who are going to be working with Athletic and Working dogs.  It would also be a useful text to have for handlers, trainers, and owners.  It mostly covers the veterinary orthopedic aspects of sporting and working dogs.

Peak Performance: Coaching the Canine Athlete, 2nd Ed.  Dr. M. Christine Zink.  Published (1997) by Canine Sports Productions, 1810A York Road #360, Lutherville, MD 21093, (410) 561-1555.  This an excellent book for trainers, handlers or owners that are working with, or are planning to work with Working or Athletic dogs.  It is written by a veterinarian who has experience training and handling sporting dogs.  For Veterinarians, it would be a nice book to introduce them to the field of Canine Sports Medicine.

Video Tapes

The Racing Greyhound. Volumes 1 & 2.  Drs. John F. Newell & Peter Yore.  Racing Education Productions (1989), PO Box 54, Warners Bay, NSW, Australia 2282.  Phone (049) 54 5344  Fax (049) 54 6371.  This is a very comprehensive collection of veterinary information that can be used by anyone associated with Working and Athletic dogs.  It covers all aspects of animal health care.  It is also useful for veterinarians who work with these dogs.  It takes a long time to watch these tapes so be prepared to take notes.  It is based on managing the racing greyhound but most of it applies to managing all canine athletes and working dogs.  I feel if you are restricted to one information source, this is the one to have. It is a tape that is hard to acquire but every individual should have a copy.

Soundness Examination of the Racing Greyhound.  Dr. Jim Gannon.  Available through the National Greyhound Association, PO Box, 543, Abilene, KS 67410, (785) 263-4660.  Dr. Gannon is internationally known in the veterinary community for his musculoskeletal knowledge.  This tape presents his methods of examining the dog for lameness.  It is a must have tape that can used by anyone who works with Working and Athletic dogs.

Your Athletic Dog. Suzanne Clothier.  Available from Flying Dog Press, PO Box 290, Stanton, NJ 08885, (800) 735-9364.  This tape presents the author's (Suzanne Clothier) methodology step-by-step approach to evaluating athletic ability and identifying functional limitations that affect performance and health.  It is a tape for trainers and handlers that presents the authors unique personal training techniques .
